Pistachio Puppy Chow


Pistachio Puppy Chow has been one of my all-time favorite treats since childhood. I first discovered it at a school bake sale and have been hooked ever since. By high school, I had memorized the classic recipe because I made it so often. Recently, I’ve started exploring different Puppy Chow flavors, and this pistachio version is a standout!


  • 1 (12 oz) box Rice Chex
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 cup white chocolate or cream cheese chips
  • 1 (3.4 oz) box instant pistachio pudding mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

How to Make Pistachio Puppy Chow

Step 1: Prepare the Cereal

  1. Pour the Rice Chex cereal into a very large bowl or a doubled clean brown paper bag; set aside.

Step 2: Make the Coating

  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, melted butter, and white chocolate or cream cheese chips.
  2. Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between each, until the chips are fully melted and the mixture is smooth.

Step 3: Add Flavorings

  1. Mix in the instant pistachio pudding mix until evenly combined.
  2. Add the vanilla extract and salt, stirring well.

Step 4: Coat the Cereal

  1. Pour the pudding mixture over the Rice Chex cereal and toss until the cereal is evenly coated.
  2. Add the powdered sugar and toss again until the cereal is well-coated.

Step 5: Cool and Store

  1. Allow the treat to cool completely.
  2. Store in an airtight container. For the best taste, enjoy within the first day or two!
