How to Make Fried Apple or Peach Pies
Step 1: Prepare the Fruit Mixture
- In a saucepan, combine the dried apples or peaches with water and bring to a boil.
- Cover, reduce the heat, and simmer until the fruit is tender, about 30 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let cool, mashing slightly if the pieces are large.
- Stir in sugar and butter; set the mixture aside.
Step 2: For Fresh Apples (if using)
- If using fresh apples, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large sauté pan.
- Add 4 peeled, cored, and chopped apples, along with sugar, cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice.
- Cook over medium heat for 15 minutes, or until the apples are soft.
- Remove from heat, mash slightly, and let cool.
Step 3: Assemble the Pies
- Roll each biscuit into a 5-inch circle on a lightly floured surface.
- Place about 1 tablespoon of the fruit mixture on half of each biscuit circle.
- Dip your fingers in water and moisten the edges of the circles to seal the pies.
- Fold the biscuit in half, ensuring the edges are even.
- Press the edges firmly together with a fork dipped in flour to seal.
Step 4: Fry the Pies
- Pour oil to a depth of 1/2 inch into a heavy skillet, or use a deep fryer.
- Fry the pies in hot oil (370°F) over medium-high heat until golden, turning once.
- Ensure the biscuit is cooked completely through without rushing.
Step 5: Drain and Serve
- Drain the pies well on paper towels.
- This recipe should make about 10 pies.
Recipe Notes
- Ensure you get a good seal at the edge and avoid poking holes as you move the pies around.
- Fry at the correct temperature to ensure the inside is fully cooked.
- Enjoy the most delicious fried apple or peach pies you’ve ever tasted!
