Introduction

This isn’t your average banana pudding—it’s Not Yo’ Mama’s Banana Pudding, a rich and creamy no-bake dessert that’s become a Southern staple for good reason. With layers of sweet bananas, buttery cookies, and a luscious vanilla pudding-cream cheese filling, every bite melts in your mouth. It’s perfect for potlucks, holidays, or when you want to wow the crowd with minimal effort.

Ingredients (Serves 10–12)

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 1 (5.1 oz) box instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (12 oz) container frozen whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed
  • 1 box butter-flavored cookies (like Chessmen or Nilla Wafers)
  • 4–5 ripe bananas, sliced

Instructions

  1. Make the pudding mixture:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together sweetened condensed milk and cold water. Add the instant pudding mix and whisk until smooth. Refrigerate for 5 minutes to let it thicken slightly.
  2. Prepare the cream layer:
In another bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping until well combined.
  3. Combine:
Fold the pudding mixture into the cream cheese mixture until smooth and fully incorporated.
  4. Assemble the layers:
    • Line the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish with a single layer of butter cookies.
    • Top with a layer of sliced bananas.
    • Spread half of the pudding mixture over the bananas.
    • Repeat the cookie, banana, and pudding layers.
    • Finish with a final layer of cookies on top.
  5. Chill and serve:
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight) before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the cookies to soften slightly.

Tips & Variations

  • Use vanilla or banana-flavored pudding depending on your preference.
  • Substitute homemade whipped cream for Cool Whip if desired.
  • Garnish with crushed cookies or extra banana slices just before serving.
