Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large starchy potatoes (Russet or Idaho)

  • 1/4 cup milk (or cream for a richer flavor)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional, cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks. Boil them in salted water for about 10-15 minutes until fork-tender.
    • Drain the potatoes and mash them while still warm.
  2. Prepare the Potato Mixture:
    • Add butter, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the mashed potatoes. Stir until smooth and creamy.
    • If using cheese, fold it into the mashed potatoes. Let the mixture cool slightly for easy handling.
  3. Shape the Potato Balls:
    • Roll 2 tablespoons of the mixture into balls.
  4. Bread the Potato Balls:
    • Set up a breading station with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs.
    • Coat each ball with flour, dip into the eggs, and then roll in breadcrumbs.
  5. Fry the Potato Balls:
    • Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and fry the balls in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
    • Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve hot with your preferred dipping sauce, like ketchup, sour cream, or spicy aioli.

Enjoy your crispy, creamy potato balls!
